The Man with the Midas Touch

Dennis Ford of Blaenavon, Wales stands head and shoulders above all others in Wales for his unique performances at national level. His tally of national wins stands at 13 — with almost as many 2nd National wins, achieved single-handed over a ten-year period.

The “Golden Years” occurred between 2006 and 2012, when no less than 11 x 1st nationals were achieved flying the south route into Wales. Dennis Ford was Welsh South Road national champion for four years running (2007–2010). What is truly remarkable is that this series of national wins covers every stage from the shortest at Chale (111 miles) through to the longest from Tarbes (608 miles).

Dennis started flying with his father Tommy Ford in 1962. After his father passed away in the early 1990s he competed under his own name from 1997 — winning a national from Messac in 1998. The purple patch started in 2006 and ran through to 2012, making 13 in total. Champion Seren Eleven — bred by John Williams and raced by Dennis Ford — won 1st and 2nd National Bergerac (506 miles) and 3rd National Saintes (431 miles), winning the Gold Cup.

Dennis was a quiet, modest, unassuming man who never neglected his club duties or his family. Unfortunately Dennis Ford passed away in late 2013 but his pigeons have left a legacy of top winners here at Tumley Lofts. We are the only stud in the world with a genuine Dennis Ford collection.
